the North Fork from the Big City, I wondered if I was making
the right move. Sure, my doctors told me I had to slow down but
this was crazy. Our new abode in New Suffolk makes Mattituck
look like Tokyo and when I stopped by the Post Office to get
a PO Box # Kim, our friendly postmaster, welcomed me by saying
"I hope you like quiet". I felt like telling him the
only quiet I really like is the My next door neighbor, Smugglin'
Johnny C, tipped me to the Lone Sharks a while back and the first
time I saw them, at the Masonic Temple in Greenport (sadly, now
an I went back for more when
they played Greenport's Monday Night Music Series to a crowd
whose ages ranged from 8 to 80, boys & gals, straights 'n'
gays, white collar/blue collar. Talk about a demographic! They
had it all, and pretty much everyone who could, danced to rockers
and ballads and everything in between. I've clocked them a few
times since, most notably at a couple of Shelter Island's annual
(Wades) Beach Blasts and only last week at the Old Mill in Mattituck,
where they raised the spirits of the Million Dollar Quartet (subbing
Bo D for Jerry Lee). Bottom line, this album is as American as you can get, and it exemplifies the kind of music that makes us Europeans love American musical culture so much. Now be a patriot and support your local musicians, especially this one." --thanks Howard and NORTH FORK SOUND Internet Radio. BIOGRAPHY: The Lone Sharks' first public performance was in the summer of 1988 at Burke's Roadhouse, North Sea, Southampton, NY, with GENE CASEY, singer and guitarist out of NY's latter-day punk/ new wave scene, college chum PHIL GIULIANO on guitar, DAVE DRISCOLL (Phil's then brother-in-law) on drums, and rock vet (and ex-and-current Bongos member) ROB NORRIS on electric bass. Immediately afterwards Gene's brother VINCENT CASEY took on bass duties and lent his vocal prowess and casual genius to the proceedings. The Lone Sharks quickly gained a foothold in the late 80s Hamptons music scene, when bars and bands were plentiful and audiences loyal and robust. A major addition came in the form of STAN MITCHELL (of New Zealand, member of the Drongos) taking over the drum chair in 1990. Stan's expertise and showmanship helped transform the band into a force to be reckoned with, culminating in 1995 with a residency at the legendary The Wild Rose Cafe. This roadside Bridgehampton night spot enjoyed several years of packed houses and great times and the Lone Sharks were at the center of it, maintaining a residency while appearing at other New York landmarks such as the Bottom Line, the Waldorf Astoria's ballroom, and aboard the USS Intrepid. By this time MIKE SACCOLITI on Fender bass, and ANDY BURTON, keyboardist, brought a new dimension to the Lone Sharks' sound. The band was able to conjure up swampy R&B and New Orleans vibes with the twangy wail of Gene's rockabilly-based guitar for hard-driving interpretations of vintage roots music. Stan Mitchell's departure for L.A. brought CHRIS RIPLEY to the fold, with a classic swing feel that characterized the band's next phase. As the millennium approached the Lone Sharks were the most popular band on the East End with two full-length CDs, "Fire. Theft & Casualty" and "Aqua Western" featuring original songs, "Swing, Baby Swing," "I Ain't Dead Yet" and "Dirty All the Time" (see the video at this website or at Youtube.com). The next move was to bring in a full-time tenor saxophonist and Minnesota native PAUL SCHER was-and IS-the man. JOE LAURO, and later TONY PALUMBO, brought the big upright bass sound to the band's increasingly swinging style. 2005's "A Lone Sharks Six-Pack" featured classic rockabilly and R&B in addition to Gene's "Sherri on the Ferry" (dedicated to their Shelter Island fans), and the lilting ballad "Who's Sharing the Moon," later performed as a duet by Gene and local great, NANCY ATLAS in her recent live CD/DVD set. Two subsequent full-length CDs 2008's "What Happened" and 2009's "Rhtyhm & Twang" further the cause of all things Lone Sharks. Two of Gene's originals tunes were featured in the premier season of the FX Network's "JUSTIFIED" TV show. In the course of maintaining their status as "Best of the Best" (Dan's Papers and Hamptons Magazine) the Lone Sharks have shared billing and/or backed-up NRBQ, LINK WRAY, SLEEPY LaBEEF, WANDA JACKSON, BILL KIRCHEN, the Who's JOHN ENTWISTLE, CAROLINE DOCTOROW, THE HIGHWAY QC's and on one unforgettable night, TINY TIM. Gene and the band are proud to part of a thriving live music scene with other bands such as ROY WILSON'S BUZZARDS, THE BLAGGARDS, MATTY LIOT's Big Up, MOONDOGS, RHYTHM BOUND, THE FOUND CATS, THE HORNETS and upstate's MARK GAMSJAGER & the LUSTRE KINGS (please check out their MySpace pages).
